Common Questions

The things tradespeople ask us most.

When does Making Tax Digital affect me?

MTD for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) is already mandatory if your self-employment turnover is over £50,000. It extends to £30,000+ earners in April 2027, and £20,000+ in April 2028. Once in scope, you must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using approved software like Debbie.

How much does Debbie cost?

£10 per month or £90 per year, saving you £30 compared to monthly. Your first month is completely free. No contract, cancel any time. One plan, everything included.

I'm not in the UK. Can I still use Debbie?

Yes. Debbie runs your whole business admin anywhere in the world: quotes, jobs, invoices, materials, expenses and profit per job. The one UK-only part is the direct Making Tax Digital filing to HMRC. Wherever you are, you can export your income and expense figures ready to hand to your own accountant or tax authority. Same £10 a month.

Does Debbie work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Debbie is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that works on any smartphone: iPhone, Android, or any device with a browser. You add it to your home screen like a normal app and it works offline too. No app store download needed.

Can I send quotes and invoices from my van?

Yes, that is exactly what Debbie is built for. You can create a professional PDF quote or invoice and email it to your customer before you have even driven away. Debbie generates the PDF and sends the email for you.

Does Debbie handle CIS jobs?

Yes. Debbie includes a dedicated CIS job type for subcontractors who have tax deducted before they are paid. Your CIS invoices are tracked separately so your quarterly MTD reports stay accurate.

Do I still need an accountant if I use Debbie?

Debbie handles your digital record-keeping, quarterly MTD submissions to HMRC, expense categorisation with SA103F codes, and a self-assessment summary. Many sole traders find they no longer need an accountant for day-to-day bookkeeping. If you do use one, your records will be in perfect order when you hand them over.

Is Debbie Making Tax Digital approved software?

Debbie is built to integrate with HMRC's Making Tax Digital for Income Tax APIs, allowing UK sole traders to keep digital records and submit quarterly Self Assessment updates.
